The Beech Grove Greenscape Commission, Parks Department and Daughters of the American Revolution are working together to promote Arbor Day this April. The DAR will create displays at the library and in the Beech Grove schools, as well as working with the Greenscape Commission to organize a coloring contest for the elementary schools. The Greenscape Commission will also work with the Parks Department to host “Going Green in the Grove” on Saturday, April 28. Businesses of Beech Grove are invited to help support Arbor Day by making a small donation for materials and prizes. Additionally, ladies from the DAR may be stopping in to ask if posters may be displayed in storefront windows. A small donation would be a big help. After an extensive search, the GBGCOC Board of Directors extended an offer to a wonderful candidate for the Executive Director position. To our delight, Ron Mayes, EdD, of Southport, accepted the position and has begun the transition into the role. Dr. Mayes, a retired educator, spent his early professional career as a technical editor, teacher, principal, and at age of 26, became one of the youngest school administrators in the State of Indiana. He later served as Superintendent of Education in the communities of Edinburgh and Kokomo. In Florida, Dr. Mayes helped establish two charter schools, he began a chamber of commerce in Edinburgh, IN and he and his wife established the Taylor Township Imagination Library in Kokomo which provided a free book every month to every registered Taylor Township pre-school aged child.
